Life Launch: A Passionate Guide to the Rest of Your Life

My book has fallen to bits, I've thumbed through it that much. I'd like to recommend it to fellow hubbers, and the way I'd like to do it is by quoting (edited)the preface. Here goes.

"On August 23, 1943, when I was nine years old, I awakened in silent terror. I was unable to move any part of my body except my eyes. My muscles seemed frozen, and my voice was silenced. Although I had gone to bed as a walking, talking, wiggling boy, I woke up the next day paralyzed with polio.....

"In the 1940s, was a dreaded epidemic of unidentified origin for which there was no means of prevention, and no real medical treatment. many who contracted it died: others went through life in braces and wheelchairs......

"At the hospital, they placed me on a very hard bed - with no pillow, in a quarantined ward. I spent my waking moments staring upwards at the ceiling - my only option - and feeling totally helpless.....

"A wise nurse named Susan spent lots of time with me. Quiet and caring, she visted me frequently and told me many things. Her main message went like this: "Your Furture, Frederic, is hidden on the ceiling, and you are the only one who can find it. Look for what you will be doing as you grow up. It's all up there. Will you be a track star, a tennis player, a scientist? Will you be going to summer camps and swimming? Will you go to college and become someone special? Will you marry and have a family? Frederic, all you have to do is to study the ceiling. When you see your future, it will start to happen!".....

"Thats all she ever talked about - my future. I spent hours and then days and months searching for snapshots of my future in the maze on that dirty ceiling above my immobile body.....

"My nurse Susan convinced me that if I would keep rehearsing my vision on the ceiling, sooner or later my body would begin to move again and make it all happen.....

"I didn't fully grasp what Susan had taught me until my midlife.....By then Ihad shifted from becoming a doctor of medicine to becoming a doctor of philosophy. After earning a Ph.D at Columbia University.......I became a professor of philosophy at Colby College, Maine, and then at the University of san Francisco. I also became a husband and a father. I wrote some books, became a good public speaker, and 'arrived' at the golas I had conjured up with Susan......

"I am telling my life story so every reader can benefit from Susan's simple wisdom:

  • See how you want your life to unfold
  • Look for your best choices.
  • Trust your vision.
  • Create a detailed plan to get you from here to there.
  • Take full responsibility for your life course: time manage every detail.
  • Find the best resources available for empowering your future. Network, train, travel, seek adventure.
  • Learn how to learn, unlearn, and relearn. make learning your central business.
  • Live on the outer edge of your possible reaches, not on the inner edge of your security."

The book is Life Launch: A Passionate Guide To the Rest of Your Life. by Fredric Hudson.

Moving, insightful, inspiring and just a great read.
