The Big Picture

by Phil Dourado May 28, 2015

Here's a post that I found from Kevin Eikenberry on the importance of sharing the 'big picture' with your people; your organization's goals, and their role in fulfilling them.

'Everyone at the Indy 500 race had a different experience of the race in part because of where they sat and what they could see.

Everyone comes to work to do their job, and in most all cases, people are there wanting to do their best work and trying to do so based on where they sit and what they can see. And they can't operate beyond what they can see.

As a leader, it is our job to be the spotter for our team member; to help people see the big picture.'

Here's three great points from the post for those of you in a hurry. For the rest of you, here's the link.

  1. Share the big picture with your people regularly
  2. Ask your people what they see, to get as many different views as possible.
  3. Give your people meaning. People want to make a difference. Help them see how they are contributing to your organization's purpose.
